How to Plan a Safe Holiday Party

By: Susan Dunn, The EQ Coach - [home]
1. Choose nutritious and "filling" foods, such as sandwiches, cheese, sausage, so stomachs aren't "empty." Avoid salty snacks which make people thirsty.

2. Keep the focus away from alcohol, by providing games, gift-giving, entertainment, dancing and/or a lavish buffet.

3. Tone down the talk before the party so the emphasis isn't on "tying one on." Discourage talk of "last year's party where So-and-So got so drunk they."

4. Do not let guests mix their own drinks.

5. Have a bartender who will keep track of size and number of drinks guests consume.

6. Have plenty of non-alcoholic alternative and do not "force" a drink on anyone.

7. If you serve a liquor punch, make it fruit-juice based so alcohol is absorbed more slowly into the blood stream.

8. Ask guests to appoint designated drivers.

9. If any guests are too inebriated at the end of the party, call a taxi, assign them a sober driver, drive them home yourself, or tell them they'll be sleeping over. If you're booking a hotel, pre-arrange booking some rooms beforehand.

10. Stop serving drinks at least 90 minutes before the end of the party, and serve a dessert and coffee. Note: coffee doesn't sober people up, but time does.
